On Shotguns: Safety in Numbers for Urban Prepping
While the romance with pump guns has long since moved on, the power and versatility of the urban prepping shotgun still holds a place in my heart and my hands.
The city is box of short ranges. A two lane-road no more than 8 yards. The average apartment will rarely hit 10. With the FBI measuring most engagements by an average of 6 shots and 8 yards, the math constantly reminds me that the shotgun is still a welcomed choice for a scenario such as civil unrest. While some may recoil at it's diminutive round count, let's not forego the calculations.
Double-aught buck is commonly home to 9 lead balls, traveling with nearly 40% more energy (ft/lbs) than the average thirty-two. With 5 rounds on board, we're looking at 45 projectiles flying downrange with haste. If talking math, Iād call that a force multiplier.
Though I'll be the first to admit the shotgun's limitations in a protracted engagement, the numbers above will make quick work of just about any problem a person could encounter. For everything else, well, there's brenneke slugs. While I'll expand upon it's merits as we go, don't let the detractors fool you - the shotgun is still a king among kings.
